On their site, Springfield says that a new option on the XD is the standard thumb saftey on off.... awesome!

Anybody know anything about it?

This is a new option, currently listed for the .45 ACP. I interpret this as a feature that has some civilian market, but is likely an attempt to appeal to jurisdictions and agencies as a duty pistol. The XD already has a robust set of safety features with the grip safety and Safe Action trigger lever. This is another layer offering the need for another deliberate step to make it go "bang."

No matter how many (or few) mechanical safeties a weapon features, the one that counts the most fits underneath your hat.

Right in the middle it says "New in 2008" Then has the picture of the saftey. It doesnt really say anything about it though....

Safety in every weapon is keeping your finger of the trigger.!!!! Just the Marine in me. Enjoying this site very much.

They may be thinking about those military trials that MAY happen. The military has specified that trial guns will have to have safeties. Planning ahead!

I own the XD 9 3" Sub and the XD45 Tactical. Neither have this safety. The new ones in 2008 with the safety are supposed to appeal to the LE agencies for duty weapons. Numerous LE agencies require this safety on handguns before buying. Really nice weapons though. You can't beat the price for the quality except for maybe Glock. Having both is nice.
