View Full Version : Another new person from California
Hi all I was glad to see a new CCW site and had to join up. I do live in California, I have had a Calif CCW since 1979. Never had a problem getting one. Have a pistol range in my backyard, So what's the problem with Calif??????
I am a retired fed and I do some training and consulting.
I do support the NRA even though I think they have given up on Calif.
I hope to do my part to promote the effort of gun ownership and concealed carry, this is one right that very few people in the world have.
Thanks for this forum, good work.

Hi Dan, and welcome!
If I'm not mistaken, California, not being a shall carry State, defers the discretion to issue or not issue CCWs to the local County Sheriffs. I've heard that getting a California CCW is not a problem for residents in some counties, and virtually impossible in others. This, due to the differing attitudes of the various Sheriffs. Unfortunately, the most difficulty seems to be in the most populous counties. Please correct me if I'm wrong about this.
Anyway, it's good to see another Californian here, and doubly good to see one with a California CCW.
Vegas George,
Yes sir that is correct. Each sheriff or city police chief has the authority to issue statewide permits.
Most large cities use the good old boy system. 5 counties don't really even issue. 35 counties do on a regular basis. the other 15 come and go each way.
It is not really just the CCW situation but it is all the Calif only laws, such as the safe gun list and calif does not recognize any other state permit.

Looking forward to your posts - I like your sig. The foot and the Kbar works for me.
If you have things that you can help the CCW community with stress and how to react, we are all ears.
Thanks again ahead of time. :D

Hi Dan....welcome to CarryConcealed.net. Nice to have another Californian here to keep me company.
Are you retired Fed law enforcement? If so that could explain why you could get a CCW without any problems.
I assume you live in an unincorporated area of a county since you can shoot in your backyard. As far as I know, no Cal city allows shooting within the city limits.
NRA give up Calif? No way! Calif is the only state in the union where the NRA keeps a full time, on the payroll, political representative (working in Sacramento). The Sacramento legislators are a tough nut to crack.
I live in the Bay Area. All the counties here are no issue. The best I have been able to do is a CCW from Utah and also one from New Hampshire. They make me feel like an American when I leave the state on trips!
Best Regards Dan....hope to hear more from you.

For many years, I give California wide berth in traveling between Arizona and Oregon. Two reasons: California objects to many of my weapons and to my ferrets. Hunting ferrets I add. Ferret hunting is illegal in the US. But yet I get the okay to do it on VA Hospital Grounds, Parks and one of my favorites Fort Lowell Historic Site in Tucson.
I got caught with ferrets in 1988 at a fruit inspection. So serious the offence I was actually escorted to the nearest point in Nevada by two CHP squad cars. Had me laughing and throwing wise cracks. Fortunately they didn't look in the trunk and find the assault rifles.
But welcome. I hope California will get in tune with the firearms laws in use by other states west of the Mississippi.
