I am a Viet Nam Veteran and never a fan of the M-16. I didn't care for either range or reliability.

I have recently read the jamming has never been completely resolved. No doubt our M-4 has some great optics and night vision. But keep in mind the cartridge is now over 40 years old and used by Russia, China and everyone else. In Viet Nam, I preferred the M-14 because it gave me hundreds of yards advantage over the enemies AK-47 and our M-16. And it penetrated brush better without deflecting.

My thinking is that it's time for both a new rifle and new cartridge. American weapons such as planes, tanks, artillary (155 Pallidan) ships are overwehlmingly superior as is our night vision. But I think the rifle needs improvement to give the infantryman overwehlming daytime superiority.
