I posed this question on another forum, and I thought I would here as well. There are approximately 1.2 million firearm owners in Illinois with a FOID card (Firearm Owners ID). Now some of those are kids under 21, but I expect the vast majority are adults. Since "fanny pack" carry or "fanny pack transport" ( carrying an unloaded handgun in a fanny pack or other case, with a loaded magazine in the case) is legal in Illinois,( the Illinois State Police lists it as a way you can transport a firearm, if you have a FOID card.) What would be the effect on crime in Illinois if every adult FOID card holder did this? Even deducting those in the Chicago area who generally too intimidated to consider it, you'd have a lot of people who could intervene in situations like that Lane Bryant store massacre in the Chicago area.

In most of Southern Illinois the percentage of FOID card holders in the population would be in double digits. One county about 25%. And the village of Goreville has 743 and a population of 999, though I suspect those with a rural Goreville address are adding some to the numbers. Of course Goreville is the "Kennesaw" community of Illinois, so I expect a lot of guns are in the village. Crime is very low!

Who knows maybe a fanny packing FOID card holder might save some anti-gun politicians butt and have an instant supporter of concealed carry legislation. Now putting you life on the line for Mayor Richard Daley or
Governor Blagojevich is something many would not do.
