Got a CCW question about military bases. If I visit a base while conducting business in town, can a cary a concealed pistol in the car while on base????? Where can I find these types of answers?

Generally, you cannot carry on a military base. It's federal property and the state has very little control over it, except for perhaps some environmental regulations. It's specifically listed by some states as being a location where one cannot concealed carry. Other states don't say anything, but almost every military base that I've been to has signs prohibiting weapons at the gate. Some do have provisions that allow transporting an unloaded firearm through the base because they might have a shooting club that accessible by the public or allow hunting. Also, carrying in federal buildings by non-LEOs is generally illegal.

Thread moved to "US Military" forum. Please carry on. :)

DD is correct in that you can't carry a loaded weapon on base. You and your vehicle are subject to search at anytime. I live in base houseing and if I don't know the guards (2 used to work for me) on the gate I will download before getting to the gate. If I know them I just CC it and tell'm I have it. But its risky still.

Yep, its better to just unload and lock it in a case with ammo being seperate.
We do get a little leeway around here during hunting season with having a gun in the car. But as far as CC goes, I wouldn't even try it.

Thanks guy's

So if I am reading all this correctly, I can have my handgun in the vehicle as long as it is unloaded and in a case, separate from the ammo?

Yes and No. If you must go on base, as I have too to get home I have no choice, but if just going on bases to do a couple things then leave. Your best to not have it at all. Hunting season again has exceptions but you still need to inform them you have a weapon. But if you still choose to have it locked in the care its your choice but be as carfull as you can to avoid being stopped for anyreason. Many bases they will pull ya over for going 3 over the limit.

This will depend a great deal on the base commander. The best thing to do is contact the base in question and ask. Remember it is a FEDERAL installation and repercussions could be more serious than elsewhere.

I think this will depend on which base it is. I visited my son last year at Ft. Benning and they allow firearms (in the car, not carried concealed) on base, provided one completes a form at the front gate. I think this is because Ft. Benning has a number of ranges that can be used by civilians, but not certain.
