Slow or SLOW?

Well... I'm still waiting on my pistol permit. It's been over 5 months since my town hall sent in my background check papers to the FBI. If I remember right they said it might be two months, so I think they are a little slow. I am not in any big hurry, but I don't really want to re-do my paperwork. Oh, and my sister hasn't heard a thing either. She started her's the same time I started mine.

Do any of you know someone who has recently had a background check done by the FBI? Is the FBI super slow right now, or do you think that they lost my information?

Thank you all for the warm welcome. :) I have noticed that there is a lot of experience on here. My thanks to all the posters.

JungleBob, I’m not sure how long it usually takes. After picking up my paperwork and getting fingerprinted, they started the background check. I think they said it should come back from the FBI within 8 weeks. As soon as it comes back, my first selectman will give me a local permit, and I can start carrying. After I have the local pistol permit, I have 90 days to get my State pistol permit. Assuming the FBI isn’t slow, and that you move quickly on everything you need to do, it should take right about 60 days before you can start carrying. Since I wasn’t in a hurry, I didn’t rush with my fingerprints or anything like that. I don’t even have a handgun yet. :( And yes, George, I’m also thinking about getting some training before I carry. :)

While CT is a may issue State, the State government rather than local has final say over denial of a permit. Basically, if I pass the requirements they will give me a permit. I think some jurisdictions closer to NY city have been really slow, but I live in a very small rural jurisdiction so everything is easy.

5 months? Holy cow! That's not "slow," its glacial. Unless your State had adopted a policy of hoping that CCW applicants die off before receiving their permit, I suggest you check up on it. It very well could have gotten lost. I haven't heard of a delay that long since the last time I dealt with the U.S. Patent Office.

You might check on it. Years ago my renewal got lost and I had to redo everything. Five months is a long time, and they may well be backlogged with requests and I think it's only going to get worse with BHO being elected.
Thank goodness Indiana when to lifetime permits.

Thanks for your comments.

I called a couple times the next day and got through to my first selectman. He said that my file was all ready, and I could stop in for my 60 day local permit any time. :) He mentioned that the paperwork had been ready for a little while (?) and was apologetic that he had forgotten to call me. My sister and I picked up our permits the same day, and yesterday we went to the CT Dep. of Public Safety to pick up our 5 year "State Permits to Carry Pistol and Revolver".

My first selectman is new to the job. We thanked him, and as we were leaving he reminded us to be careful. We assured him we would be. I wonder if he knows how many of the other town officials who work in our small town hall carry. 8)

Anyway, I think we left a good impression, and now we have our permits! I'm happy. :patriot:

BTW, yesterday I also purchased an XD9.

Congrats on the Permits and the purchase! ... Be sure to let us know how the XD Shoots and how the first carrying goes.

Is this just a local (county?) permit? and you are sending off papers for a 'statewide' permit?

The system for getting a Connecticut permit can certainly be a little complicated. :)

About 6 months ago, I went to my town's first selectman and got a State Pistol Permit application and fingerprint cards. The local State police barracks took my fingerprints, and then my first selectman submitted my application and fingerprint cards to the appropriate State and federal authorities.

Then came the long wait. As soon as the FBI sent my background check back to my town first selectman, he could issue me a "local pistol permit".

When I called my first selectman last week, he said my paperwork had been ready for a little while. I went to my town hall later that day, and picked it up. This local permit is as good as a State permit, except that it only lasts 60 days and is non-renewable. Wednesday, I turned in my local permit to the DPS HQ and they issued me a 5 year, renewable, State of CT Pistol Permit. That is the real thing. :) Now, so long as I renew my State permit every 5 years, I won't need a local permit again.

I wonder does any place issue a permit faster than Centre County Pennsylvania? They do it frequently in 10 days including mailing time for out of state licenses, at least to Illinois.

I sent an application and $20 check to New Hampshire for a nonresident permit on a Thursday and had the permit in my mailbox on Wednesday.

Speaking of town officials carrying, most people even in Illinois, probably don't know that there is a provision for alderman, mayors, village presidents and trusties to carry in Illinois if they have completed a 40 hour training course.

Dorothy Tillman was a Chicago alderman who carried and has now retired. I wonder if she still carrys?

It depends where you are applying. I understand even the Pa LTC can take 6 months if your are in Philadelphia (I am told), as opposed to probably a week or less if you were a Centre County resident and dropped it off at the sheriff's office. Florida and Utah permits take 45 to 60 days.
