Open carry is an interesting subject. I live in Nevada, an open carry State. I've been here 8 years, and I haven't noticed anyone carrying openly. Although it's allowed (not prohibited), no one seems much interested in doing it. Of course, Nevada is a shall issue State for CCWs, and lots of us carry concealed.

I've accidentally carried in the open on occasion. That would be when I get out of my vehicle without thinking about putting on my coat. One day I spent more than an hour in and about a car dealership with the gun open on my hip. No one so much as raised an eyebrow. So, I'm pretty relaxed about it. Now days, I'll get out of the car to pump gas without putting my coat on, or walk from the parking lot to my community center. But usually, the gun is concealed.

I question the concept of concealed carry in preference to open carry. I'm protected either way. But, as a deterrent to crime, I would think open carry would be more effective. I mean, why keep'em guessing? So, the apparent public policy favoring concealed carry seems backwards to me. Just my thoughts.

If and when open carry is approved in Texas, I will still carry concealed. It will simply keep me from getting in trouble if the wind blows my shirt up over my holster.

I want to keep them guessing. If they know that I am armed, the element of surprise is gone. I want them ill prepared to deal with my thunder.
