OK, we had a poll on full, compact, or subcompact size frame, how about one on caliber?
How about it, folks? How big a caliber/powder charge/bullet do you carry on a regular basis?
Just curious...

M

9mm 115 gr FMJ for the range,
9mm 115 gr JHP for defense.

My prefered caliber is .45 in the 1911 platform. Of my CCW pistols only one is not in .45 caliber, it is in .40 caliber. I enjoy shooting the other calibers at the range, but something that starts with a "4" is what I carry.

.40 S&W jacketed hollow points for defense, and whatever FMJ the range makes me buy for target...
In my experience, .40 is a good compromise between recoil and power. I dislike 9mm... it feels like a BB gun, and .45 and .50 are just... overpowered for most situations.

I have an assortment of handguns in various calibers, however, this is what I have on my CCW:
S&W Model 60-15, .357 Magnum Revolver, 3" Barrel, Adjustable Sights, Uncle Mike's Combat Grips.
S&W Model 637-2, .38 Special +p Revolver, 1 7/8" Barrel, Fixed Sights, Crimson Trace LG-405 Laser Grips.
Kimber Stainless Ultra Carry II, .45 ACP, 3" Barrel, Fixed Sights, Wilson Combat Slim Line Grip Panels.
I have for many years had a fondness for S&W J-Frame Revolvers. I recently aquired the Kimber and it is quickly encroaching on the Model 60's status as my primary carry weapon. I generally carry the 637 as a second weapon daily.
Thanks,

Like Poogsdad, I was a 1911 only, and have moved to .357 .22 .22 mag .45 and .45 long colt depending on what set of clothes I am wearing. Nice poll though. It will be good to see what shakes out. I selected the .45 as it my 80% carry.

Small sample, but two observations: (1) I wasn't surprised to see the 9mm and .45 running neck and neck, and (2) I was surprised to see the .40 in the lead. Somehow, I didn't think the .40 was that popular. I know it's a great caliber and load, but I just don't see that many of them around here.

:D I guess that if you don't see them, then we are doing our part as CCW holders! 8)
I prefer .45 but I can get free ammo if I'm with buddies who have access to .40. Free meals are also welcome. :D

9mm is what I "transport". I talked to a fellow who is a LEO recently. He said he used to carry .45 when on duty. He said he has switched to .40 caliber, as he shoots better with it.

My duty weapon is a DA/SA Sig 226 9mm. It's a great gun, but I also own the same gun in a 40 cal and enjoy it as well. My personal carry weapon is a DA only Sig 229 40 cal, I love her. I found the by having the DA only, it makes for a much easier draw from the concealed stand point because there is no exposed hammer, making it a very, very smooth draw. What a great weapon to carry and small enough for the CCW community. I also have the DA/SA Sig 228 9mm, which Sig no longer make. This is a great gun, same size frame as the 229. All my guns have night sights and I recently put crimson grips on my 229, which makes her even more appealing.
I have found traveling out side of the US, It is much easier to found 9mm ammo then anything else, simple because it is a NATO round and every country uses a 9MM for the most part.

I know alot will disagree, but I think the 9 is underpowered. I have been in two gunfights, 1 armed with a 9mm and the other with a .40 and I can assure you, I definately prefer the .40 for stopping power, and it is a big difference.
I have heard many people say with +P rounds, this and that that they are ballistically similar, and it's HOGWASH... the 9 does not come close to the 40.
IMHO...

Main carry is 9mm, but I have been known to load up one of my .45's to carry for a few days.

I'm fortunate to have quite a few choices. These days my usual choice is a Kimber CDP in .45ACP. But I also like and tote my S&W 686 3" (USCustoms Service issue), and my Ruger 2-3/4" Speed Six in .357.
