If it becomes law, S. 593 will allow a concealed weapon permit holder in SC to have a firearm in the glove box, console or trunk of his/her vehicle while on school or college property. This is currently a felony under state law. The firearm must be stored in one of these locations BEFORE the vehicle enters school property, and may not be removed into the passenger compartment, worn on the body, nor carried around campus or into a school building. Also, non CWP holders still will not be able to have a firearm inside his/her vehicle.
Certain pro-gun state legislators plan to work on expanding this to non-CWP holders when the legislative session re-convenes in January 2010.
S. 593 was ratified on 5/27/09 and Gov. Sanford has 5 business days to sign the bill into law or veto the bill. If the Governor does nothing, the bill becomes law after 5 days.
