I have yet to have the opportunity to shoot any of the .50 autos such as the A&E. I always found .44 mags as a bit excessive in weight and recoil. With six to 8-3/4 barells, I find them nose heavy. Recoil spoils the accuracy I have with other calibers. On revolvers I favor 4 and 5 inch barells. I do better with autos with longer barells. At extended range I am also more accurate with autos. And a .45 Government has never been a problem even with some hot hand loads.
Be interested in input of shooters on the .50. That record hog shot by a 12 year old kid was done with a .50 and definitely has me thinking if a 12 year old can handle it, so can I. My opportunity for shooting one will likely come at the cost of buying one. A rather expensive proposition.

keep in mind that my advice may not be excellent advice, but it may help you out.
if you are interested in investing money into a new gun, do not rush into it. take your time in fully researching all aspects of the product then ask around and see if any of your friends or family has something close to what you want, and if you can not locate one, there may be a local gun range near you that will rent them out thus giving you the oppertunity to try it before you spend hundreds of dollars on something that will not work for you, just like a car, you are not going to go out and buy a car without a test drive.
I am in the same boat, i too am looking into purchasing my first pistol real soon and i have taken the last two months to find something that i like, and just by renting a few different types from my gun range, i have narrowed it down to either 2 or three guns, that i would feel comfortable in the fact that if i ever needed it for defense, it would do me well.
now the gun range on the other hand. i like to shoot anything and everything i can.

I know this is silly, but I've recently become interested in getting a Desert Eagle .50. The way this happened is even sillier. A couple of months back I got a PC game called Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, Vegas. I bought it because all the action takes place in, you guessed it, Las Vegas. I can fight the bad guys in my own home town. It's quite a rush.
Well, the bad guys are tough. And, one of the ways to beat them is to take a riot shield as your primary weapon, and a Desert Eagle .50 as your secondary. You can shoot the Eagle while hiding behind the shield, and it is very effective. I've gotten to love that pistol in the game. It really knocks those tangos down.
See what I mean by "silly?" Anyway, stay tuned. If I actually get a Desert Eagle, you'll be the first to know. :D

George, I don't know if you've read the book Rainbow Six or not, but like most of Clancy's work (at least in the Ryanverse, which is all of his I've read), it's a gripping story. I just finished reading it (again) last weekend.
I can see why you'd want to drop the BGs in your own city-God forbid any of us ever have to do it for real, but if they decide to come play, I hope we enjoy the same success as the Rainbow team, if nothing else by sheer force of numbers.
Blessings,
M

The thing that impresses me is the .50 is said to have the knock down power a .44 mag has at point plank at 100 yards. I have read some reports that the recoil is not at all bad. But the sizes of the shooters were not given.
I have a shooting range about 100 miles away. You can rent all sorts of guns, even rent various full autos. But the .50 seems to be off limits. They won't rent them.
In Proenix there is a range that even lets you rent a dual 20mm Vulcan machine gun. Each gun has a rate of fire of 6,000 rounds per minute and believe each round would cost about $30. You are going to have to be pretty wealthy to afford that one.

I shoot the .54 Hawkins. With mini ball or a sabot it comes very close to many modern day cartridge rifles. I would compete with mine against a 30/30

Guncrafters, Inc. makes the new .50GI in a Government platform -- not for the faint of heart since it'll set you back almost three grand, but a nice custom handgun, nevertheless...

Very interesting, ColtM1911A1. I didn't know about Gun Crafter Industries. Their weapons look awesome. Maybe someday .....

You might know or understand a bit more when you realize the owners and gunsmiths are Alex Zimmerman and Vic Tibbets; that assures not only a solid background in the 1911 platform, but perhaps one of the best Governments you'll ever see from a couple of the best wrenches in the world, IMO and the opinion of most gunrag writers...

I have a Mark XIX Desert Eagle, in 50AE,, I also have the 44 Mag barrel and a 357 Mag barrel for it. The 50 is fun to shoot, the only problem is the recoil - it eats reddots. They only last a couple of hundred rounds. It does a nice job on white-tailed deer, drops them right in their tracks. All things considered, it is fun to shoot, but, kind of pricey, even if you reload. When it's converted to 357 Mag, there really isn't much recoil, even with 180 gr sillouette loads. Of course, this pistol weighs 5 lbs, empty. :)
