I find the fact that government regularly exempts itself from the 2nd Amendment of our Constitution truly amazing. Just on the face of it, you'd think that 2nd Amendment rights would be recognized and honored on properties owned and operated by our governments more than anywhere else. After all, our governments are creatures of our federal and state constitutions. If the Constitution is to be respected, surely that's where one would expect to find it in practice.

But no. Every publicly owned building I can think of is declared off limits. It's illegal to carry your weapon into the buildings, or even onto the grounds. It makes no sense to me at all that it is legal for me to carry my gun into the local supermarket, but a felony to carry it into the Post Office. In fact, here in Nevada, the Post Office is putting satellite Post Offices in our supermarkets!

Sooner or later we need to start lobbying to get this changed. I don't like to see our governments flagrantly violating the Constitutions under which we live. First, we need to settle for once and for all the stupid dispute about the 2nd Amendment expressing a collective as versus a personal right. Then, we need to tackle the abuse of governments forcing us to "check our rights" at its doors.

PS: The NRA is gearing up to fight the good fight on our behalf in the Supreme Court in the case resulting from the Washington DC decision earlier this year. This will be a crucial case, effecting all our CCW rights. I sent the NRA some extra money earmarked to help pay for this effort. It would be a good idea for you to consider doing likewise.

It is clearly illegal to carry any weapon onto Federal property or buildings unless a peace officer. FYI that includes National Parks but not National Forest or BLM lands. Other government buildings have laws of their own disgression. Most all these restrictions result from incidences over the years. In the 30's it was common to assassinate court witnesses. In court houses that is also the reason for the padding you see on elevators.

I believe in the absolute right to keep and bear arms, but not the absolute right to carry anywhere. For instance any place with metal detectors probably has good cause to prohibit weapons. Brings to mind jury duty several years ago. If caught with a knife or similar the guard would tell you to hide it behind the fire extinguisher in the hallway. Should I ever be a prisioner, I now know where to find a weapon.
