Only president of the 20th Century, I know of to carry a handgun was Theadore Roosevelt (he hated the use of Teddy and no one used that in his presence) Somewhat wondering about other presidents though. I am guessing it may have been more common in the 19th Century. When running for president under the Bull Moose ticket, Roosevelt was wounded by an assassination attempt. He returned fire, not sure if he hit. With a chest wound, he continued his speech.
I'm just guessing, but imagine Jefferson likely carried.
A thought came to mind about the now reversed Washington DC gun ban. I wonder how much the gun ban might have been influenced by the Roman Empire. The US Government was modeled after the Roman Republic. And in Rome, it was required that the army disarm before entering the city. No doubt prompted by fear of a victorious general seizing power.
