I once worked a few months as a bar tender in Seligman Arizona. A very rough town with cowboys and Basques from the Bouquious Ranch. I had a club, a Winchester Model 12 12 ga and a Ruger .357 behind the bar. There was no phone. Nearest phone was about a block and a half away. As for police, they were 50 miles away in Williams. Never even pulled the club. People in that town were very vindictive. Almost used the club a few times but decided against it. Had I ever even pointed a gun, I would have had to leave town post haste never to return. They would have gotten even.

There were 3 or so ranchers that would come in plain looking for trouble. The would expose rolls of thousand dollar bills jammed into ther coat pockets just to show off. Pealing on off to buy a drink. Yeah Sure! The bar made about that in two weeks. Then they would finaloly find a $20 or something I could change. But seeing that kind of money and how careless had thoughts of knocking them in the head and leaving town. With the money they would most often mention they had just sold a herd. Only guessing but, probably severaql hundred thousand.

I had one major incidence. A really big cowboy mixed it up with one of the Basques. I was aware the cowboy had a revolver under his lether fleece jacket. Before I could react, the cowboy's penis and a good deal of his intestines were on the floor. He lived but it wasn't pretty. The Basque escaped to the Ranch where he was immune from laws and extradition. But if he ever set foot off and was caught he would be prosecuted.

Only real personal problem I had is someone took a shot at me with a rifle from across the street one night. I think a robbery attempt as I took the cash home every night. Could have also been a warning shot and disliked. But I think the purpose to get me to drop the bag and run. A little further from the door, that's probably what I would have done. Especially if he had waited for me to close and lock the door. I went back inside and spent one very cold night sleeping in the cooler room. Only place with thick walls.

Hired a woman waitress and bartender. She could smooth out fights where I couldn't. A potentially violent crowd but very polite to women. Being a bar tender had another drawback. I would get terrible hangovers from the fumes emitted from the bottles. I suppose ventillation fans would have helped.
