This story dates back to 1933 in Des Moines, Iowa, but it's an inspirational one, and it involves one of my heroes, so I thought I'd share it.
Melba King, a then 22-year old nursing student was walking home one evening when a mugger approached her and demanded her money. Reagan, who was working as a radio sportscaster, saw the mugging from a 2nd story window. He leaned out the window with a .45 caliber revolver and told the mugger to "leave her alone or I'll shoot you right between the shoulders." The mugger ran off and Reagan walked the woman home.
In 1984, at an Iowa political rally, Reagan had a surprise meeting with the same woman where they reunited on stage. He laughed and told the crowd, "This is the first time I've had a chance to tell you the gun was empty. I didn't have any cartridges. If he hadn't run when I told him to, I was going to have to throw it at him."
