I posted this in the Nevada forum too, but thought that it has broader interest in as musch as what they are doing could set a precedent for other University Systems in the country. What do you all think?

Looks like Nevada Universities are finally providing teachers the oppurtunituy to protect themselves and their students. I wonder if this might be the beginning of a trend . . .

"The regents are expected to vote on a proposal to grant Nevada colleges and universities that can afford it the option of giving faculty and staff paid leave to undergo certified police training.

Regent Stavros Anthony, a Las Vegas Metro Police captain, wants to allow employees to apply for the training so they could carry weapons and respond to situations such as the April massacre at Virginia Tech."

Personally - I understand if Universities do not allow students - I know it would cause a riot -(I say I understand, not that if I was a student, I would want to carry) I wrote a Blog about teachers carrying. I think that qualified teachers should be allowed to carry if they go through the training and it would be nice if the Universities allowed the teachers to train with Law Enforcement.

In the open Student Body - there are so many students that do not practice, and I feel that the teachers would have a higher percentage of people that would practice and treat the CCW privilege as a position of great responsibility. As Spidermans' Uncle said "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility".

I agree that all Rights entail reciprocal Responsibilities.

But, I have two comments about this Nevada proposal.

1. All this training business is nothing more than appeasement in an attempt to assuage the ire of the anti gun crowd. No one needs more training than the regular CCW course provides to any CCW applicant. Teachers who carry aren't any different than anyone else who carries. Teachers are not expected to act as Peace Officers, and they don't need LEO training;

2. Arming teachers and staff, but not allowing students with CCW permits to carry on campus, makes it look like students are regarded as criminals. Personally, I have a much higher regard for students than I do for professors. Students (many of them) go on to accomplish great things. Professors stay to teach yet another class of students. Those who can, do; those who can't, teach.

All that this proposed Nevada law is about is fear and misplaced trust. All that needs to be done is to remove the campus gun ban, and allow CCW permit holders to carry on campus. That's all.

First off, I doubt any of the schools will come up with the funding to send faculty off for weeks of training. This is feelgood "we done something" policy.

Second, the training is irrelevant. Profs are going to spend 95% of the time learning to use equipment they won't have (police radios, squad cars, backup) to do tasks they shouldn't be doing (spotting criminal offenses and arresting students).

We have enough trouble with licensees who are wannabe cops. It shouldn't be encouraged.

In the open Student Body - there are so many students that do not practice

But remember, we aren't talking about "all students." We're talking about students who are at least 21, who have been responsible enough to get up to be seniors or graduate students, or non-traditional students who are entering college after working in the real world for years. There are a lot of 30-40 year-old students out there that are more realistic than profs who have never left academia.
