I am waitin patiently for my carry permit to arrive in the mail....its been 2 weeks, 1 day, and 14hrs...I am not counting...lol...I lived in CA my whole life (33 yrs) without even thinking about carrying a gun...then I apply for it, and I run to the maibox everyday like a 5 yr old thinking "it might be here, maybe they werent that busy..." LOL, I am a wreck!

yes, I know, just forget about it and it will come...yeah right, everytime someone tells me that here in TN, they follow it with, "Mine only too 2 weeks, or 30 days. or whatever..lol..

oh well, I will just continuse putting the sigma in the trunk for the trip to the range till the HCP gets here...poor thing, all it wants is to ride in the front seat and listen to music!!!

Yeah, well just "wait" until you've carried the darn thing around with you for a couple of years. You'll be singing a different tune in your car.

Seriously, you have no idea how awkward, heavy, uncomfortable, and inconvenient dragging a pistol around with you all the time will turn out to be until you've given it a good try. Keeping it concealed just adds to the burden. I carry every day, but I consider it a job and a duty. It's not particularly fun.

You know. . . . .

I like carrying in the winter. I have this big coat that I bought that has a DEEP pocket in the inside left front of the flap. No one can see it, and unless I get a hug from someone, they dont know I have it there. It has a heavy duty zipper at the top of the pocket, and I have enjoyed not getting jabbed in the side with the pistol all year long.

Canynracer,
That is too bad you have to keep the Sigma in the trunk. In Illinois, that "right denied" state you could keep it in the front seat with you if it was unloaded and in a case, full magazine of ammo as well, as long as you have a FOID (Firearm Owners ID) card. Not that I'm criticizing TN laws, I'd trade yours for Illinois given the chance. I find it curious though. You non-Illinoisans have to transport a firearm here like Canynracer does, unloaded and unaccessible or broken down. I do like that you accept a non-resident Pa handgun license, which I have, and carry on when outside the "Peoples Republic of Illinois" The Pa license takes about 10 days to get BTW, unfortunately you couldn't get it without the TN license.

I was thinking I should ad a disclaimer for the post I made. Though carrying a firearm in a case with the ammunition in your vehicle is legal you still may get arrested as some LEO's have been instucted incorrectly that it must also be not immediately accessible. I guess this is like open carry in some states, like Wisconsin legal, but you may be arrested anyway.

Just thank god you don't live in NY. It took 8 months to get my permit. No joke! On average, most take longer to obtain.

While you are waiting for your CCW to arrive I would use this time to do a lot of reading and learning.

The first book I would recommend to anybody is, In The Gravest Extreme[u], by Massad Ayoob. After that, check out "The Dangers of Intervention" by Evan P. Marshall. (I posted it on one of the threads)

Then it comes time to train, and select your carry gear. My biggest piece of advice on this matter is, [b]dont skimp on the belt. The belt is the foundation of the whole concealed carry set-up, if you carry on your waist, much like the foundation of a house. If you have cracks in your foundation your house will not stand.

I am in favor of getting a holster and belt from the same manufacturer. Now, let me tell you a little secret. I spend a lot of money on leather. I'm partial to Milt Sparks, Matt Del Fatti, Mitch Rosen, Ted Blocker, Greg Kramer and Ken Null. In short, I don't skimp on quality gear because I've learned a long time ago that in most cases, "You get what you pay for."

OK, I'm going to get off my Soap Box now. Take care, stay safe and enjoying learning.

BikerRN makes a heckuva good point. Can't tell you how many young and new handgun folks I have known who skimp outrageously on leather for their toys. Don't! Get the very best from the beginning and I guarantee you won't regret it. And always start with the belt. You DO get what you pay for from a reputable, time-seasoned maker. Don't expect to pay less that $75-90 for a decent belt and probably near the same for a good holster. It's well worth it.

I have to differ. When I started carrying, I used a belt from a uniform store frequented by our local emergency services-EMS, LEO, and fire- and was not disappointed. This is about a 1 3/4 inch wide belt, black in color, that retails between $20 and $30. Because of who it's designed for, it does the job quite nicely, and if there is a drawback, it's that the belt is very plain, without decorative tooling, but in my opinion, this is a "plus".

Under most circumstances, I agree that "you get what you pay for" or more precisely, "you don't get what you don't pay for", but this, I think, is an exception to that rule.

YMMV.

Blessings,
B

have been carrying for a few days now, My department has implemented HR218 for its correctional officers (DE) I have 2 Kramer holsters an IWB and a scabbard. After only 3 days with a GLOCK 33 on my side I have just placed an order for my new gun belt from Kramer. Cannot wait until it arrives.
