:?: Since this is my 1st post, I'll try and keep this short and simple. My wife recently aquired her fathers 1953-72 era Ruger Single Six revolver with both the .22 and .22/magnum chambers. She has limited experience with this gun from her days living at home, and remembers her father mentioning that this gun -HAD NOT- recieved the safey upgrade he was notified of many years ago. What upgrade? I found a pdf manual on-line, and it simply states that one was available for those guns with the serial N0# below 62,00000 and this one is well below that, but doen't say what the upgrade was?
She plans to use this gun when we shoot at our local range, I'm just getting started with my Beretta 92 9mm, and admitedly have limited experience with revolvers (I started shooting with her brother's Ruger .22 MarkII ), what should we watch for?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

According to Wikipedia:

"Prior to 1973, the Single Six was produced without the transfer bar mechanism, making it unsafe to carry them except with only 5 chambers loaded, and with the hammer resting on the unloaded chamber. Ruger provides an upgrade free of charge for owners of any old model Single Six to enable them to modify any revolver without the transfer bar mechanism to incorporate the safety feature."

I hope that helps.

Ok, that makes sense now. I did some further reading on-line late last nite, and what you've mentioned puts it all in place. I'm think'n we'll be pushing for the upgrade from Ruger sooner than later. I think her dad didn't want to "mess" with it for nostalgia sake. Me..not so much. Besides its hers now, and being safe is the only way its going to be.
Thanks!!

You want the upgrade. I have an old Colt model that is very simular and they are great.

If you are going to carry it in the woods or as a carry gun, the extra shot would make the difference instead of "Click".

You and your wife will like the upgrade...

Thanks for posting on the forum. :D

The wife wins. She's taken taken her dad's side with the whole nostalgia and value issue. She has no problems with using the gun "as-is" at the range for now. And as she pointed out.... it was given to her.

So....now that that's settled.....I'm thinking about a small semi-auto for her to transition to when she desides she's ready to goes for her Consealed Carry Permit.......any recomendations?
