Here's an interesting story about a homeowner who defended his home after being the victim of several burglaries. The homeowner had completed a concealed weapons course and also received Navy medals for marksmanship so he was more than qualified to defend his life and property. Here's the story if you want the details.

The mentality that only police officers should be trusted with guns should be challenged.
Agreed.
However, we have to do this in a way that confirms our respect for officers and the law. We should concentrate on examples of the competent and legal use of firearms by citizens, perhaps mentioning that, as in this case, the citizen handled the situation as competently as any police officer could have. We do not want to slip into citing instances of police incompetence.

Your point is well taken, VegasGeorge, and in no way was I attempting to point out police incompetence in this situation as there clearly was none. I have the utmost respect for police officers as I have a relative who was an Indiana State Trooper for 32 years and another friend who is currently serving on the local police force. In fact, it was was relative who first taught me how to respect and shoot a gun. I edited my original post to eliminate any confusion about my respect for LE. :D
