Why were criminal charges brought in the first place?

I don't know why charges were brought, but I will say I liked this box at the bottom of the screen:
Comments are the sole responsibility of the person posting them.
The comments on commercialappeal.com are a part of our house.
In our house, we expect people to behave.
So here are our house rules: We don't allow comments that degrade others on the basis of gender, race, class, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation or disability. Epithets, abusive language and obscene comments will not be tolerated... nor will defamation.
Robust, even heated debate we like. Straying off-topic or flaming, we don't.
In other words, act as if you have home training.
Break our rules, and we will ban you. No exceptions, no second chances.
There's something to be said for the direct approach. Well said, Memphis Online!
Blessings,

I like that statement of the rules. Of course, in our case we have some additional rules relating to content.
As to the linked article itself, I have a comment. I always thought that proper law enforcement procedure was to investigate the facts first, then bring appropriate charges, if any. I don't like the backwards approach illustrated in the article.

Agreed, that is odd, especially when TN's permit is tied for "most recognizing states" at 35.
Of course, if false charges were filed, perhaps it will be a financial opportunity.
