Welcome Connecticut! I've been there once, and I love the accent of the people. You're at the right place for learning. :D

Welcome Tag 24, I like Ct. I was stationed there at the submarine base in 1968. Pretty place.

Welcome, Tag24! It's good to see more states getting represented and more importantly, people with interest in concealed carry and the right to keep and bear arms. Don't be shy about asking questions; odds are that SOMEone here and likely several of us all asked the same ones or similar. We'll help however we can.

Welcome aboard! It's an exciting time to be a new shooter. Even without a CCW, you can probably find an indoor range that will give you some instruction (for a fee, of course), and rent you gun to shoot. Just go do it.

Welcome Tag24. we were stationed in New London when my father was training for the submarines. I can remember chasing squirrels as a boy. It was a fun place as a child. Welcome to the Art of the Bang BAng.

Tag24, Welcome to the forum. Connecticut is a "may issue" or discretionary issue isn't it. That means that those who issue can deny your permit based on their own opionions of your need for a permit or qualifications. I know some states are almost "shall issue" meaning there are set requirements for a permit and if you meet them they are required to issue you a permit. Do you know folks that have carry permits?

Glad to hear your state isn't too hard to get a permit in. I was thinking of something I took two of my grandsons to, it was an NRA family shooting camp. I imagine you could have attended it even if you didn't have family going with you as each of us had a seperate application. Anyway the cost was only $20 and it was geared for beginners, they started with basics, safety rules, how to put your sights on target. They started in the morning with .22 caliber rifles and pistols converted to .22 caliber a Glock, a 1911, and a Browning semi-automatic target pistol. In the afternoon you could shoot larger caliber rifles such as 30-06, SKS, AR15 and .45 caliber semi-automatic, and cow boy single action revolvers. All the ammo was supplied as was lunch, it was a great deal. Something like that would give you a chance to try out a few different handguns and help you decide what might be right for you. I believe that this was on the Illinois State Rifle Associations website, but your state probably has a similar affiliated association.
The guys helping with training were great. They let my grandsons try shooting anything they wanted but they didn't push them to try something if they didn't want to. My one grandson and I were in line to try the cow boy single action revolvers, but as we got to the front of the line he decided they were too loud for him. I tried shooting one and then some different rifles before we went back to the .22 range. They were both doing well there by late afternoon and this was their first time out shooting.

We were there a couple years before you, I don't remember when because I was just a kid back then. My father eventually went onto submarine service and was very proud of his dolphins. I grew up in San Diego and the subs were tethered at Ballast Point in Point Loma. His first sub was the USS Capitaine 336(?). Then onto the USS Catfish 339(?). The Capitaine was sold to the Argentinian Navy and was the sub that the British sank during the Falkland War. My dad was sad when he heard this news. I served in the Army, like my grandfather.
