Dozens of University of Colorado at Boulder students plan to protest the school's ban on concealed weapons today by wearing empty holsters to class.

The day-long protest - organized by a third-year law student on Facebook.com - is a silent reminder about how defenseless students are on campus, even those allowed by law to carry a concealed weapon, organizer Jim Manley said.

At first I liked the empty holster protest. But, now I'm beginning to think that the protest is as almost as empty as the holster. What if the government decided to ban dissenting speech. Would we walk around with our mouths open without saying anything? I'm not advocating an unlawful protest, yet. But, even peaceful protests have to cause the establishment some difficulty if they are to be effective. What, exactly is the effect of wearing an empty holster?

I think in theory, it not only tells the students and faculty, "I'm one of the people who would be here to cover your http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd198/St-Michael/moon.gif if Bad Things© were to happen", it also tells the school administration how many there are who would do so. There are not many people who would wear a holster if they did not own a gun and expect to carry it.

Of course, that said, I do wonder on occasion how many people will violate a university policy (but not a law) and CCW whether they have an empty holster or not. After all, "concealed means concealed", doesn't it?.

Cogito, ergo porto.

I'd carry concealed on campus if I had a smaller weapon to do so with. Unfortunately my Glock 22 is full size and is difficult to keep 100% concealed.
