Why does it not surprise me that the jackasses, specifically the "Congressional Hispanic Caucus", are willing to screw up a bill that provides funding for one thing or another, ostensibly to help people, because their feelings are hurt that someone expects them to speak English?

"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Theodore Roosevelt
January 3, 1919

President Roosevelt died three days after penning the letter containing these thoughts.

This is America. http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd198/St-Michael/USA.gif We speak English here. If the "old country" is so keen that you want to keep it as that active a part of your life, go back. When our ancestors emigrated from their homelands and came here, they first took pride in being lawful citizens, then in assimilating themselves into the country and being American. Many young Italians don't speak that language, nor Polish descendants their historical tongue, nor Jewish children and grandchildren Yiddish, and this is precisely why they do not..

A few nights ago, I watched an annotated version of Tom Clancy's "The Hunt for Red October". I don't know how familiar all of you are with that story, but in the movie, the roles of many of the Russian sailors were played by recent (as in nearly just-off-the-boat) immigrants from Russia.
One part has them singing the National Anthem of their former country, and the caption read that many of them refused to do so, even for a movie, so proud were they to be in America. These people weren't even anywhere close to becoming American citizens, and this is the pride they felt.

I am a patriotic American; some might say militantly so... but reading that, I was ashamed. I was not ashamed of nor for myself, but of and for my countrymen who hold our country in so little regard that they can't even be troubled to go vote, let alone to speak up in defense of our Constitution or to carry a gun in their own defense. Priorities, I guess. Oh look- another "news" story about Britney Spears...or is that Lindsey Lohan?
