I have a copy of the original - decided not to post but use in training classes.

And hence why I *never* chamber a round in *any* gun unless I am getting ready to fire it.
I know that many of you out there like to carry "Cocked and Locked" but that just opens up a whole 'nother can of worms.
I have had ONE negligent discharge in my life - I miscounted the number of rounds I'd fired from a .22 Revolver and ended up putting one into the table as I secured the weapon. Fortunately I didn't hit anyone with the round. That happened to me when I was 18, and I swore I'd never again give myself the opportunity to do it again.

Rule number one: Every gun is ALWAYS loaded.
Rule number two: NEVER point the gun at anything you aren't willing to destroy.
So simple, if people would only remember to follow the rules.
In case you didn't notice, the fellow in the linked story ignored BOTH of the above rules.

There IS a time that the muzzle of my gun gets pointed at something I do not want destroyed: the palm of my hand; but that's when I'm field stripping it.
But the first step in a field strip is to clear the chamber...

(Yes, yes... I filmed myself playing with my gun, just like I have pictures of myself with it... OH NOES! I must be some homicidal maniac!!! )

lildobe, if I were you I would change my routine to avoid pointing the muzzle of the gun at any part of my body when field stripping it. And, clearing the chamber doesn't get it, because rule number one says "Every gun is ALWAYS loaded." I don't care how many expert gun handlers "clear the chamber." I always handle a gun as if it was loaded. In my world, there simply are no unloaded guns.

I've yet to be able to figure a way to strip WITHOUT doing that... Maybe I'm just awkward about it, but whenever I try and strip the gun any other way, I can't maintain a tight enough grip on it.

What gun are you having trouble field stripping? I am sure i can locate a video if no create a video showing how to do it without putting yourself in the way

My Glock 22... The problem is my hands aren't strong enough to release the slide lock AND pull the slide back at the same time as holding the handle of the gun, so I end up pushing the slide back with my palm, while countering with my other hand as in the video I posted.

Hi lildobe,
Here's something that may help, courtesy of Mrs. Kathy Jackson, as posted on her page, The Cornered Cat (http://www.corneredcat.com).

Folks, there is NO better site than Cornered Cat for women wanting information about guns and concealed carry, and most of what is there is as useful to us men as it is for the ladies.

Thank you very much, St. Michael! Excellent site, and though I know about the "Gunsmith's Grip" for retracting the slide, my hands just don't seem to be strong enough to do it properly. My left hand isnt strong enough to pull the slide back, OR release the takedown leaver, which leaves me in a catch-22 since I can't do both with my right hand... Though that'd be a neat trick!
I guess I'll just have to continue practicing :D

Another thing that you can do is take an empty magizine and insert in the pistol thus automaicaly locking the slide back
oh and are you left or right handed? i will see if i can create a video showing good techniques i have a friend who seems as though he has approximatley the same amount of muscle that i may be able to use in the video. i am also working on getting a good video together on field strip for the SA XD .45 that i own

Locking the slide back isn't that big a problem. I can usually bump the slide-lock into place with my left hand while working the slide with my right. Besides, I don't usually keep empty magazines around... I own two 15-round double-stacks and they are both kept filled. Though the day I need 30 rounds of ammo will be a very sad day indeed.
I am technically Ambidextrous, Left Eye Dominant, which leads me to shoot left handed... however my right side is significantly (physically) stronger then my left, so when manipulating things, I tend to do it with my right hand and arm. My fine motor control skills, while poor in general, are about equal on both sides. (You don't want to see me try and write with a pencil!)
However when I get on the range, I get get 15/15 rounds center mass at 20 yards, left handed :D And that was back when all I knew was Teacup grip. Since then I've been taught several other grips, so hopefully my grouping will improve next time I get to the range!

I agree, very good thread. That is what we should be doing helping other and working ways around problems, this is the safe place to do it. We should help other to solve problems here where it is safe and we a free to discuss concerns, that way when the time comes on the street, we have worked our way through those issues. When the rubber meets the road, life is on the line and we better know what the heck we are doing. "LCR" Locked, Cocked and ready to Rock!!

Practicing, yes. Perhaps you might get one of those hand/finger exerciser things, or a cheaper solution would be either a racquetball or a tennis ball, and squeeze it in your left hand to increase your grip strength.
Just my $0.02

We have gotten feedback from Carryconcealed.net readers that some of the "Reviews" showed how little Clark knew about guns because he said that he does not carry with a round under the hammer in revolvers.
With the new guns he did say that the new guns had better safetys, but does not carry one under the hammer because of old habits. I would like to throw one out there for his defense. How about every training manual from the NRA says "Never trust a mechanical safety".
Our police advisors tell us that the new guns are safe to carry with one under the hammer, and I carry with one under the hammer if I am in an area that may require defensive action.
I can see both sides of the story and I agree with Clark that it should be left up to the individual shooter.
