Ok so here is a real life situation that happens many times daily and in fact happened to my roomate (with some differences)
Your heading up to a local gas station at three am to pick up a midnight snack. you get out of you car walk up to the store, before you take your 10th step a man twice your size approaches you and asks is you have any spare cash, now you notice something wrong about this guy his reaks of pot and then in the split second that it took for you to asses this strangers appearence this guy takes another 2 steps forward, in the last 10 seconds you have gone from level yellow, to orange it is now time for you to decide what to do.......
So again I ask what do you think you would do please think it out and then post it.

Well, I'm going to ignore the fact that a man "twice my size" would be upwards of 600 lbs and probably wouldnt be able to move very fast...
Anyway, first thing I would do, while backing up the two steps that he advanced towards me would be to verbally tell him that no, I don't have any cash while at the same time, slowly and subtly bringing my left hand around back to the but of my gun.
If he continued to advance, I would again fall back another two steps and undo the thumb-break on the holster, while asking him to please turn around and go away. (At this point, orange is quickly becoming red!)
If he became any more aggressive, or advanced on me further, I would draw my weapon and chamber a round, but not draw down on him.
Lastly if he continued to advance, or became any more threatening, I would draw down on him and inform him of my intention to defend myself, ordering him to back off, or depending on the situation, to lay on the ground so I could call the police.
And if he decided to be crazy and pull a knife, gun, mace, flail, whatever; I would fire my allowed one shot center-mass and hope that he doesn't continue to advance, lest I need to turn him into ground chuck with the remaining 14 rounds of .40 jacketed hollow points I carry.

Don't forget to call police afterward IMMEDIATELY, even if you don't have to fire or even expose your firearm. The first report in is the one that will color their response, and if the perp reports "Some maniac with a gun accosted me at the quickie-mart", suddenly, YOU'VE got to prove your innocence. Also, the next guy he approaches may not have the self-assurance to back this lowlife off.
Word to the wise.

I'm of the opinion that most bad characters like the one described are looking for a victim. So, my idea is to act the least like a victim as possible. I think I'd take a quick step or two back just to gain some distance, then speak very loudly and with a lot of forceful anger in my voice, "STAY BACK!" I'd also change my posture to more of a fighting stance as I went for my gun. I'd want the BG to see that I meant business and could cause him a lot of trouble.

Very Interesting, I agree with George here, Wolfs are looking for sheep to prey on. This is a well known fact. I have lived my life as to be no one's sheep.
All of your experince and everything we have been taught is a filter, when an incident like this happens your brain filters all the given information and you have that split second to decide what you are going to do.
I am a 6 ft, 250lbs man, that works out 4 to 5 times a week, and bench sets at 275lbs. I have studied multiple Martial Arts and was a MMA fighter before getting married. I am POST Cerified and have worked as a bouncer in crazy places.
Am I a sheep, hell no I am the wolfs nightmare. Living in Libby land, I don't have a CCW, so that is not a comfort blanket I have.
As your suspect takes his two steps forward, he is deciding:a. is this person afraid, b. can I take this person, c. how easy will this be.
I deal with people everyday that are on something or another, stand your ground, firmly give your commands, putting your hand at his chest and stopping him in his tracks. If he doesn't stop you are in "Red" and by all means protect yourself. For me, it's a quick slap and a grab to subdue and call the black and white taxi to transport the badguy.
Then of course you have to give statements to the Police and fill out the needed paperwork.
But being out at 3am is not to smart either. I always say there are only 3 types of people that are out that late:
1. People coming home from work
2. People working
3. and people up to no good!!!

Whatever you do, do not touch the guy as others have posted. Reaching up and pushing the guy back, if he is a little under the influence could fall over and that would be about the time a witness sees "YOU" push him down.
My stragety.. Don't be suprised. You are out at 3:00 am, you should already be on alert. No reason for someone to step out of the dark, you did take your Sirefire flashlight and highlightes the dark areas before going past them didn't you. Most people do not think of that. BUt nothing illegal about shining a light in a dark corner to see if someone is there. If they are there, you have just spoiled their suprise.
But in going with the scenario, if the BG did walk up to me the response is simple. Get off the X. Move diagonally away from the guy and quickly, and the same time directing him not to follow. The guy has not shown yet he is willing to use dealy force, depending on your state or jurisdiction you may be "required" by law to retreat from him.
While moving off the X depending on how you carry you could discreetly pull your knife or fiream and move them into a covert ready position. Wait for the guys next move, but don't be the agressor. Shooting someone simply because they invaded your space if they live, could leave you in court on assault charges.
Once off the X you are now in a defensive posture and his next moves will determine if you fire or not. When I say move off the X, you should have easily cleared 5ft or more in a diagnal direction. From there keep moving if he approaches, as long as he is just moving towards you he has not shown the intent to use deadly force.
However, you can only keep moving for so long at some point you will have to make a decision and I think in this case a good ole wack is probably legally safer than shooting.

Very good point as many people do not understand the power of YELLING... It gets the BG's attention quickly that you mean business. Sheep will will simply whisper it.
