Can anyone offer a good suggestion regarding an above-water-level holster or manner of carry for a fly fisherman in black bear territory? I'm not looking for caliber arguments, just a dependable holster for a 44 magnum. Mernickle holsters has a chest-carry system that looks great, but it's quite expensive. Any suggestions? Thanks!

well if you use overalls you may consider the kangaroo it fits around your stomach or chest. there are some reviews on this site

Honestly, for big gun like a .44 magnum, I'd just put it in a secure belt holster, then drape the belt over my head and one arm. Let the holstered gun hang to my back or under my arm, whichever is more comfortable. Then you could wear it conventionally when you are out of the river.

You could wear a regular shoulder holster, but that would look kind of strange out in the river.

My only suggestion would be a nylon holster of whatever style you prefer (shoulder, belt, crossdraw, ankle, whatever) so you don't ruin the leather.

You know as well as I do, that no matter how far into the river you INTEND to go, you'll go until the water is 1/2 inch below you wader tops (unless the fish are REALLY hitting), so the chance of soaking your holster is pretty good.

I don't have to tell you how I know this, you already guessed it.

El Paso Saddlery makes a "tanker" holster for just about anything you might own. They make good stuff.
