"Anderson said he had the opportunity to shoot DePaolo, but didn't because he saw him before in the neighborhood."

I take this to mean that the fear of retribution from DePaolo's family or friends stopped Anderson from shooting him.

Could be. That or he thought he didn't need deadly force to subdue him. I can't cast doubt on your read on it, though, George. You likely hit it square-on.

I was listening to this on eon the Scanner when it happened (Aside from being a gun nut, I'm an avid Scanner enthusiast)

The officers reaction to this was priceless... the dispatcher ran a call for a home invasion, multiple units responded. a minute or two later, before the first unit got on scene, the dispatcher updated them letting them know that the "homeowner had restrained the actor"

When the first officer got on scene and called for the rest of the responding units to slow down he sounded so incredulous, yet amused when he said "the homeowner has the actor ... um ... 'in custody'"

It was great... :D
