View Full Version : CCW Turn Around time
Hey all..
The wife just got her CCW in the mail yesterday, making it exactly a ten week turn around from day of application. Just thought a thread to compare this time might be useful to those wondering what an average wait time might be.. (presuming enough applicants list thier own personal times to make an average for others to get a sense of the duration of the wait here in S. Nevada)

Well, that's about 4 months faster than mine took several years ago. Things must be improving around here. :D

As a rule of thumb I always tell my CCW students to expect around 4 months - but if it comes back soon to consider themselves lucky. I'm sure part of what takes time is the background check and the other part is probably just the volume of applications at the time you're applying.
My advice: make 4 months your rule of thumb and remember to apply for your renewal about 6 months out so that your new one comes in before your old one expires.

I live in Pershing County, and it has been four weeks for me, and I am waiting patiently.
I was kinda hoping being out here in the tumbleweed it would be a little faster.
But I am not frustrated, I could still be living in Maryland where I really would be in any category to even apply for a CCW!
Carl in Northern Nevada....

Hey Carl.. welcome aboard. Not only can you CC now.. you can also own a machine gun, suppressor, and even shoot live and in the open out the boonies, just like God and the founders intended! Welcome to Nevada and the board.

Yes, and I do not have to wait 7 days to pick up my weapon, then wait another 30 days before I can buy another....!!!!!
And yes, it is nice to drive a few miles away from town, and after checking downrange from where ever I am, set up some targets and shoot!
I have a friend coming next week (for the Laughlin River Run) from Maryland, and she is excited about going shooting!!!
God, I love this state!

IIRC, it took about 8 weeks for the NE permit, and about the same or a little less for the UT permit. FL took about the same a couple of years ago. But when I sent for the PA permit it took 8 days and that included mail time out and back! Now THAT'S service!

Friday will be eight weeks.
I figured being a Veteran and Federal Employee and former police dispatcher, it would have gone a little faster...
Oh well.....
Still waiting with a smile on my face!

When I got my non-resident Pa license it took 10 days including snail mail time. That seems to be about the normal time frame. Compare that to the Illinois State Police who are taking 8 weeks to issue a Firearm Owners ID in Illinois. State law requires them to issue in 30 days.
I also have to say that the folks at the Centre County Sheriffs Department in Pa are some of the most courteous and helpful civil servants you will come across.

Okay, I have been real patient, but now I am starting to get a little ticked......
Today has been 12 weeks since I applied to Pershing county for my CCW......
I called yesterday to check the status.....
Well, the lady that does the work on them told me this long story about how they just found out that their finger print machine has not been sending prints to Carson City since February!!!!!!!!!
So, after listening to her complaining, I finally asked her what she was going to do about this.....
Her answer......."well,........I really do not know what we are going to do".
I told her that I was off on Fridays, I can come in in the morning to redo my prints......Her response....."well.......the officer that does prints is off, I will have him call you when he comes back to duty".
I proceeded to remind her that they made two hard copies of the print cards, they could send one of those, and I told her that when you enter background information into NCIC, it takes (at the most) five minutes to get a response from the FBI......She said that she knows that, and questioned my knowledge....I reminded her that I am a veteran, and a federal LE/fire dispatcher........She said she would have the officer call me....
I told her to have a nice weekend (she is off on Fridays), and said my goodbyes...
WHAT MESS!!!!!!!!!!

Our State charges plenty of money for this simple permit. It's an outrage that they take months to process and issue the permits. I'm sure a private contractor could do the background checks, and issue the permits the same day, while you wait. Instead we have public servants (tongue in cheek) helping us week after week after week.

Carl,
Just out of curiosity, your location indicates Winnemucca, but you applied to Pershing County??? Just wondering why. Perhaps you've moved to Pershing County??
Anyway... The law says they have 120 days. I would recommend politely reminding them of the law. They should issue.
If they exceed 120 days your only REAL recourse is to take them to court. I would suspect a judge would (or at least SHOULD) order the issuance.
Just my ever so humble and personal opinion.

In fairness to the Illinois State Police someone on the Illinoiscarry.com forum said they had just gotten their FOID card 29 days after their check cleared, so they are speeding up apparently.

My address shows Winnemucca, but I actually live in Pershing County. Its that part of Nevada that has everyone (even those in this part of Pershing) with a Winnemucca address.
I have a PO Box in Winnemucca, but I put my box and physical address (Even though I get no mail there) on my DL when I moved here, so that I had no problems purchasing weapons. They wont sell you a weapon if you only have a PO Box on your license.
I think I will call the Sheriff directly on Monday.
Like I said, it only takes a few minutes to get your ENTIRE criminal history(if you have one) back from the FBI via NCIC, and they are supposed to mail a hardcopy of the fingerprints done electronically to Carson. So, even if the fingerprint scanner was not transmitting the prints, they should have sent the hardcopy, and since I am a veteran, federal employee, and have access to NCIC, my prints should come back verified!!!?????
Again, I wait with a smile, but a little ticked, cause I know that even though it is taking some time, if I was still in Maryland, I would not even be having this conversation......

Roger that, Carl.
Perhaps a call to Pershing County Sheriff Ron Skinner IS in order.
I believe Sheriff Ron Skinner to be a "good guy." He and a deputy are regular handgun/steel match shooters.

Glad the forums are back up!!!!
For those that are not on usacarry.com, I sent a very well written (what I considered well written) email to Sheriff Skinner.
I waited two days, then called him to follow up.
When I called, I first spoke with the lady that handles the permit application.
She still had no idea of what they were going to do about the prints, and I again asked to speak to the deputy who handles that, and again he was off. I thanked her, and hung up.
I called back, and asked the dispatcher to speak to Sheriff Skinner, and she put me through.
We discussed the issue for a couple minutes, and then he said he would check it out, and get back to me.
He called me back that evening, and explained to me that there appears to be a software problem with the print machine, and that even the software engineers had no idea how to fix it.
He stated he had my application in front of him, and said that if the prints do not come back by day 120, he would still issue the permit.
Although I think it is a little more hassle than there needs to be, at least I know he is going to issue my permit.
Oh, and it was nice that he took my call, and addressed the situation personaly.
So, 31 days to go.....

I reckon that is about as good as one could expect, given the circumstances.
I DO have faith in Sheriff Skinner. Although I don't know him real well, I do see him and chat a bit at the area steel plate shooting matches. (He shoots pretty darned good.)

Well here is a new one....
I was in Hollister this weekend so I had no phone with me....I get back and have a message from Pershing County....
Please call us, we had a problem with our Finger Print system (Electronic), we need you to have them re-done, and start the process all over again!
Now, my 120 days are up on Tuesday.
They knew about this (Electronic) problem back in March when I applied for the permit!
Sheriff Skinner already told me in a phone call that he was going to issue the permit at 120 days with or with the new prints. (Remember, they HAVE HARD CARDS and he acknowledged it!!!).
I even offered to come back in over a month and a half ago to "re-do" the (electronic) prints, and he said that would not be necessary!
So, I will call the lady back on Monday morning and remind her that I have a verbal agreement with the Sheriff!
What a crock this has turned into!

Okay, here is the latest....
Let me give you guys the story, the way it happened....Hopefully shorter...
I called the PCSO as asked to do in the message.
I spoke with the young lady whom has been given the task of "cleaning up" the mess that is CCW.
According to her, the print machine is fixed and they needed me to start the print process over again, somebody retired, another is retireing and she has been tasked with the CCW operation.
I reminded her of the verbal agreement with the Sheriff on this finger print deal. She said she knew about it, and was trying to do her best to complete the process.
She said that she had a couple of phone calls to make to Carson City, and she would call me back.
She called back about an hour or so later, and said that she may be able to issue the permit without doing the prints again.....So, she took down some more information, (stuff that I thought was on the application) and said she would call me back.
She called back a couple hours later to tell me that the hard cards were sent to Carson, and based on my background check, PCSO is issuing a temporary permit, and when the print clearence comes back from Carson, it will become permenant.
So, on my way back from a meeting in Reno tomorrow, I will stop in Lovelock to pick up the permit....
I still feel that the print "business" is an excuse for something else wrong within the system, but being calm, and curtious (sp) with all involved (Including Sheriff Skinner) helped me attain a verbal agreement with the Sheriff and move on to the issuance of the permit...
Now if I can only figure out how they say I qualified with a Ruger 9mm (I only qualified with a CZ 100, 357 revolver and Glock 23), the world will be right tomorrow afternoon!

ITS DONE!!
120 days to the "T"!
I have the permit in my hands!
Now I have to help fine tune the new lady doing the permits in why revolvers only need to be listed once......One step at a time...She is new.
I am really glad the process is complete, and Kudos to Sheriff Skinner for keeping his promise!
Oh yeah, I might start dispatching for Pershing County, they have had some turnover in the communications branch, and since I have the experience, they asked me to put in my resume'!
I guess being cordial and professional through all this is paying off...
