Folks, I'm doing some research for an article on the reciprocity/recognition laws of each state. I need some input from someone each state who knows the laws of that state.
Here in South Carolina, the law is written so that our state honors NO permit unless we have a written reciprocity agreement signed with your state. SC currently has written agreements with eleven states (AL, AR, KS, LA, MI, MO, NC, OH, TX, TN, WY). We are trying to get our laws changed to make SC a recognition state. If passed, this would mean that SC would then honor all permits issued by any other state. Unfortunately, we are getting strong resistance from our state legislators and SLED, our state law enforcement division.
Here is what I'm trying to find out: How many states will only recognize the permits of another state IF that state recognizes your permits?
I know that there are 12 states which will honor all permits regardless (AL, AZ, ID, IN, KY, MI, MO, OK, SD, TN, UT, VT) but that is not my question. There are other states which, in addition to various criteria, have written into their laws that they will "only honor permits from states who honor our permits." This is the information I'm seeking.
I hope to inform our legislature of how many states have laws like the one we hope to pass, but also how many others will begin to honor SC permits once the law passes.
Thanks!
