I started this past weekend preparing our place for visitors, being the holidays and such. As I started to clean and orginize the place, I noticed something, "I have been in a defensive mode for a long time" and the house is not very kid friendly. Being that my sister-in-law has a 2yr old little boy, I figured I better put things out of reach. Boy do I have alot of stuff! How many of you can understand that? I have weapons of all types spread all over the house. Knives, swords, staffs and even a few guns in some well hidden places. As I started to secure all of it in the safe for the holidays, I thought about how I never give this stuff a second though throughout my day at home cause I know where everthing is. It has just become a way of life, folding knives, K-Bars and other items are always within reach of my everyday doings at home. "Man I have been at this to long" When you do things automaticlly without even thinking about why you do it.

I have the same issue - My pastor is coming to spend the Christmas Season at my house. He and his family are dear friends and I have to go through the same drill. Swords over the door jam.......
Something that my family practices and takes for granted may flip another family out.
But ErnieH - I am willing to bet that you are one of the guys that the neighbors will run to in an emergency.. :D

You better believe it!!! I am in charge of security for the community of condo's. We have a few LEO's in the community so we all switch off nights of patrol. So they all know where to come in trouble. We have had a few of them over for coffee and snacks, and a couple of them have just stared around the house and ask "you know how to use those"! I just smile. In fact I found one guy around the block that has become a pretty good sparring buddy.

They may be well hidden, but if they are not locked in a safe, bad guys can get them. Any burglar worth his salt knows where to look. If you leave them out, they are up for grabs.

Unfortunately, if they are locked in a safe, they're likely inaccessible when you most need them. It is for this reason that if I'm around the house and dressed in more than just sweats, I'm armed.
Like Ernie and Stubob, I also have several swords about the house, and a few shorter blades as well, not to mention a staff or two. Additionally, I've got four burglar alarms with 16 legs, four tails, and a LOT of teeth around the house.
I don't hold many illusions about most of the weapons; I like them for their appearance. The only ones I really train with are the ones that go bang, but unarmed, most people won't challenge a guy holding three feet of sharpened steel, now are they?
Blessings,
B

Never owned a sword, although I'd like to some day just for grins. I haven't had any training with knives, so would probably hurt myself if I tried to defend myself with one, allthough I carry a Kershaw clip on folder for last ditch defense and utility.
The delilma of multiple weapon owners, to safe or not to safe. I lost a pistol once many moons ago when an apartment I lived in was burglarized, and I swore "never again." :x
I keep my carry gun handy for sudden defense, but the others are locked in one of 3 safes.

Ernie remind me never to go to your house, I might trip and fall on one of your knives or swords.
Keep up the good work!!

not to mention the variety of sharp items you can cut you food up with..hehe.
Well for me i collect knives mostly pocket knives, and I did not know how much i had either. I am moving and i found 3 under my bed alone.
On another note my pistol usually is unloaded, and in the safe. Some may say that they keep theirs on the night stand, that is not for me. more and more i will holster up and get used to the feel of different holsters and they fit me and my SAXD.

Don't have a handgun yet, so I keep my home-defense AR-15 under the bed in an unlocked case, with three loaded mags next to the rifle inside the case. When a handgun becomes part of my "arsenal" the AR will probably be locked away, though still somewhat accessible if the situation allows enough time. Handgun will go next to or under the bed, mag in it, probably not with a round chambered during overnight storage. Until I install a tactical light, the flashlight will sit right next to it.
At my parents' house, they have to be aware if any children come over. They've got guns readily accessible in just about every bedroom (one of my brothers and my little sis still live at home). AR-15, Beretta M9, Winchester Defender 12ga, Beretta 9000s, Ruger 10/22, bayonets, a 38" broadsword replica, the list goes on.
The more I think about this, the more I realise I need some proper training...
