Open letter to the Cook County Commissioners and Residents regarding the proposed SAFE STREETS/WEAPONS REGISTRATION ORDINANCE:
Disarming or criminalizing the law-abiding citizen by masquerading yet more, quixotic gun laws and ordinances is the answer for some gun-grabbing politicians and their media friends. As such, this letter will not regurgitate any of the publicly available statistics, studies, policy papers nor the thousands of academic sources because unfortunately, for many of the people who hate or fear guns the facts do not matter and they never allow themselves to come face-to-face with the real problem – themselves; this includes gun-grabbing politicians. When ones suppressed anger reacts so vehemently to the sight or even the thought of a firearm, they turn the angry emotional response into something more socially acceptable – like fear. On the "niceness" scale, fear is more palatable than hatred. This fear is peddled as gun-control and all too often the public will drink it like “Jamestown Kool-Aid.”
Mr. or Ms. Anti-gun Politician, all “niceness” aside, if you decide that you cannot muster the moral courage to see violent criminal activity for what it is and address it as such, it will be expected that you will continue your deceitful, anti-Constitutional, heavy-handed nanny-state tactics. Your oppression of decent respectable men and women, gun-owners or not, either by property confiscation schemes or suspension or elimination of constitutional rights as enforced by police powers in the worlds most notorious dictatorships will continue. If your “best” is more imposed gun-control at the stroke of a pen and without public discourse, you will guarantee every honest person in Cook County will have no legitimate means of self-protection or preservation. You will make them defenseless victims to their perpetrators by forcing them into a no-win situation in their own home and car through Cook County’s Safe Streets/Weapons Registration Ordinance as sponsored by Commissioner William Beavers.
Close examination of this ordinance reveals that the only people who could comply with the registration requirements would be Chicago residents who had previously registered their guns with the city. Everyone else in Cook County will have to turn in their guns to the police like the citizens of Australia and England have recently had to do - in large part because of a lethargic public – a sad and unfortunate fact of which Mr. Beavers is likely banking.
Is there any better way to transform Cook County residents into martyrs than by trampling on their Second Amendment rights with the added benefit of criminalizing the mere possession of a functional self-defense tool with the imposition of fines, liens, vehicle impoundment and incarceration? Please tell us once more Commissioner Beavers, how this ordinance which takes away the last line of defense in a non-provoked violent criminal attack will keep life-loving Cook County residents safe? Furthermore Mr. Beavers, why is there nothing in this lengthy ordinance that actually combats crime - rather it only makes more honest people criminals?
I suspect that in the eyes of the millions of legal gun-owning Cook County residents, any Cook County Board member who affirms this ordinance with a Yeah vote will be seen as an un-American constitutional criminal, but a criminal none-the-less.
Imagine the not so unrealistic quote never to be published, reminiscent of another infamous quote by the well known Illinois gun hater Sen. Dick Durbin. The quote has been slightly changed to reflect the times: It reads…
“If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an honest Cook County resident describing what the Cook County Board had done to their constituents in their jurisdictions, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime -- Pol Pot or others -- that had no concern for the protection of residents rights. Sadly, that is not the case. This was the action of Commissioner William Beavers and others in the treatment of their freedom loving citizens.”
Yes, harsh and grim, but hardly far-fetched given the perversions this country is enduring in this day and age.
We ask you Mr. and Ms. Cook County Commissioner, before you criminalize every means of “appropriate” self-defense (aka a working gun) with your affirmative pen, to think about your constituents for whom you claim to care so deeply, and understand that they see through the charade and your impending action will have done absolutely nothing to deter crime – rather, to turn more honest people into walking victims looking only for a place to lie, then persecuting or jailing those left standing who dare defend themselves, families, friends or anyone else innocent.
What we say to you Mr. and Ms. Commissioner, loudly and clearly, is that in the right hands, firearms are an enabler for real goodness by opposing that which is evil and protecting the innocent among us. Real Americans have such capable hands – not criminals who prey upon others, and certainly not those whose cowardice or lack of intellectual depth causes them to appease bullies or blame inanimate objects for the worlds evils and the evil within themselves.
Whether individually or collectively, there is a moral imperative to defend ourselves. And just as we all share this undeniable right to self-defense, is there not logical reasoning that we also share the right to the means of self-defense? There is no honor in joining your martyrdom and Cook County residents will not lie down for you if you will not stand up for them.
To the law-abiding residents of Cook County and the collar counties, you have two choices: (1) in large numbers, take action, be heard loudly and clearly without ambiguity, or (2) simply secure the target Commissioner William Beavers and other like-minded fear-peddling oppressive leaders have already pinned on your back. Then lie down and be still while they tie the puppet strings to you – for you have just lost your first and most important civil right: protection against a tyrannical government.
As elected community leaders, all eyes are upon you to display the moral courage to do the hard work you signed up for, to make the right choices you said you would make, and refocus your attention on the bad guys rather than attack and destroy the responsible members of this society.
Respectfully but Emphatically,
Philip Huff, Dupage County, and the millions more who feel the same.
