View Full Version : Free Range OUTDOOR shooting areas
Many here may remember when you could just drive up west charleston/out to apex/east lake mead blvd./etc. and shoot. I have a copy of the clark county map that shows where you can now legally shoot and can't read it to save my life, and I suspect that others have the same problem. I happened across directions to an area outside of Boulder City that also has information on some "hidden" trails and sites here in southern Nevada and thought I would link it below, after Directions to shooting area.
DIRECTIONS: Take U.S. 93/95 south from Boulder City 12.4
miles to Eldorado Valley Drive.
You will be turning left
through two white triangle markers into the desert.
Follow the short dirt road to the large flat area which has a huge
mound of dirt on it.
You will see a road on your left
(north/northeast). Take that approx. one third mile to a large
cylindrical concrete tower (see picture on left).
You can park there and shoot or start hiking south east to the mountains
or the flat area which will be easy to notice on your left.

If the directions to your house include 'Turn off the paved road.....
(Only kidding. I envy you guys actually being able to go out somewhere like that to shoot.)
Blessings,
B
OK so I went out here yesterday to finally check it out in person and it is as advertised... The two "white triangle Markers" are actually the livestock grate ends. (damn what a huckleberry I must truly be. lol)
The area is a good place to LEGALLY shoot outdoors and not so damn far from town as Nye county.
Enjoy

As far as I know, I thought you are allowed to shoot as long as you are 1 thousand feet from any nearby building, road, or dwelling. Of course it also requires you to not be on public property (BLM should be acceptable shooting land).
I dont honestly think there is any safe land to shoot from besides a range. I heard in the Review Journal of some woman getting arrested for shooting in the desert, though I dont know if it was private land or not. I just think that it depends who wants to rat you out and ruin your day TBH.
I was out shooting away from my house in the NW part of the valley a few months ago and we had a pretty bad experience. We were out on BLM land, and were at least 2 freakin' miles from anything that you could call man made, and I knew we were in a completely 100% safe and legal place to shoot. However we had this helicopter that was flying around duck behind a mountain and hover right at the ridgeline looking right at us. I don't have any idea who they represented or what authority they had, but we decided to pack it out of there just in case. If anyone has any advice for a situation like that, I'd be glad to hear it.
I personally love shooting out where there aren't any other people breathing over my back waiting for a spot to shoot from, and also being able to do things that they wouldnt allow you to do at a range (example: I was at a range in the city and they didn't allow you to stand and shoot a rifle, in my case a Garand [I guess in World War 2 they all had to lay their rifle down on rests or something]). It is nice to be by yourself w/ your friends/family and be able to casually shoot without paying someone.
Anyways if you know of somewhere else around my neck of the woods (NW part of the valley if I didn't mention it), or if you have any advice for me for situations like the one I described, I would be most thankful.
Thank you
Hey Rommel,
You are right, BLM land should be kosher but.. the county only gives us this:
http://gisgate.co.clark.nv.us/gisplot_pdfs/cp/illegalfirearms.pdf
to decipher where we are "legal".
Good luck reading it or getting any county official to clarify for you.
Sounds like out NW two miles from anything would be verbotten... (even on the road to Indian Springs/Mercury) too many Developers/customers/non-existant Government bases out that way... I would count on getting stared at by black helos out of Nellis (or who knows where) or taking a chance on some Authoritay Figger giving you grief... I sure do miss America. *sigh*
Nye County is still pretty wide open.. if you want to go up past I.S. and cut over towards the Beatty area, (farther, I think than you already went) you should be ok too, but shoot for outside of Clark County.
But directions I gave above, (other post has link and link has pics) though not in your neck of the woods, are valid, have LOTS of elbow room (the dirtbike crowd uses another nearby, but in the opposite direction area) and as "safe" as you can get with standard U.S. Issued Freedom.
Maybe I'll see you out there. Enjoy!

Hey thanks man, that PDF is very useful.... And thanks for the advice, I might go out to your place one day. Anywhere where I can practice with the good old freedom tool.
Not that it matters, But I was between 20 and 21 where I went and had all the trouble, more like 20. Very interesting....
Thanks again!
I live in the NW as well and I used to take the dirt road to the north just past the Indian Reservation and shoot in to one of the berms with all the brass on the ground in front of it. Then I saw said map and purchased a membership to DSRPC.
I'm all for an "organized" range experience, but damn if I can see paying $150.00 a year to go shoot in the desert. Maybe I was spoiled as a youth lol.
DSRPC has been there a long time... I used to shoot free across the street and a little bit east of there.
More power to you and those who don't mind paying to practice your liberty/hobby on "The Gov'mint's" property.. I just still prefer using MY/our (read PUBLIC) land without fee....
YMMV

I was spoiled as well (used to shoot at Buffalo and Lake Mead in '85), but I guess I'm nervous about the prospect of dealing with a charge of illegally discharging a firearm. Also, I'm without a 4x4 at the current time and I can drive my accord or minivan around DSRPC. DSRPC also has some ranges with known distances which can be convenient. I don't how aggressively they enforce the desert shooting ban, but I've heard speculation that once the shooting park opens they will use that as a reason to crack down on desert shooting.

This would not surprise me at all.. *sigh*
worse comes to worst.. I still have nye county, and then???? maybe alaska.. *another sigh*
We better enjoy it while we can.. or help/teach our kids to prevent this kind of thing in the future...

I dont want to any anything that would probably upset anyone, so I'll water it down as best I can.
Anyone that comes up behind me and tells me to drop my weapons has another thing comin', and thats for damn sure. Besides though, I'd reckon anyone that has a beef would probably just send a letter to your house.
I also reckon that when the Supreme Court rules that the 2nd ammendment is only valid if prescribed by law, which I believe they probably will pretty soon, that they will start making gun bans en masse to crackdown on "crime"
Sorry for the rant! Just had to get it off my chest. Never had good experiences with the big man. They wanted to tazer my dad when he was in a diabetic reaction for darn's sake... then treated me like a felon after they asked if we had guns and I said yes!
Back to what you were saying Erus, I agree. Educate people... a lot of people just don't know that guns can protect and save lives, not to mention kick out illegitimate governments. Probably should mention they are a great hobby too, but most people here know that.
Cheers!

On a lighter side from my CCW wait,
I went out to Sonoma Canyon yesterday, (Thats in Pershing County).
Drove into the canyon along the creek about 4 or so miles in, and found a place that has been used for shooting.
Played with my new Mossberg 500 tactical 12g and my 40 S&W for an hour or so.
Its BLM land, so after I was finished, I policed up my brass and shells, my targets and left it as I found it.
FWIW, it seems that here in Northern NV, as long as you are not causing any REAL problems, folks leave you alone when you are practicing.
And, what a beautiful day, and I am in here working overtime!!!!
