I have a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology, and I studied the effects of anti depressants and other psychoactive drugs. I can assure you that those drugs, particularly in combination with alcohol and/or street drugs can cause suicide and senseless violence. It's no secret. It is nothing new. It's been in the literature, and well known to practitioners for at least 15 years.

There is way too much of that stuff being prescribed, especially to young people. For some reason, the worst reactions seem to occur in young males.

In my opinion, the drug excuse should be no defense to criminal violence. But, where young people commit these mass murders under the influence of prescribed medication, I think it's another strong reason to hold the family and doctors responsible.

That this set of letters was published in the Toledo Blade does not surprise me. Ohio has passed full preemption, but two cities which had stricter laws that were invalidated by that action are fighting it and one (I forget if it was Cleveland or Cincy) had a mayor advising his police to continue enforcing the city law that was in conflict with the state law. (The city attorney advised the PD to disregard the mayor's instruction)

In particular, the letter making reference to the "assault weapon" (sic) being able to fire 120 rounds per minute was wrong in that even if the kid could pull the trigger two times a second, every second for a full minute, the likelihood of him having a 120 round or larger magazine is relatively slim. Too, he fails to consider in his comment about the supposed inability of "the gun community" to stop the murderer the man identified as NW in the story located at Joe's Crabby Shack, found here (http://joemerchant24.blogspot.com/2007/12/firsthand-account-of-von-maur-shooting.html). (psst! Click the word "here (http://joemerchant24.blogspot.com/2007/12/firsthand-account-of-von-maur-shooting.html)".)

If people had time to call and get all weepy-waily on their cell phones to police dispatch, no one could have had time to pull a pistol and put a round in the SOB's brainpan?

Cogito, ergo porto.

Blessings,
