Ballistic fingerprinting is a complete joke... but I preach to the choir.

Enough firing and cleaning, the "fingerprint" changes with normal wear and tear.

A few dollars worth of supplies, and the same amount of time spent as a normal cleaning, and the "fingerprint" can easily be altered.

Heck, if they ever try to implement this, I'm changing the "fingerprints" of my guns on principle alone.

How could ballistic fingerprinting fool so many people? I'll admit it. I was fooled.

Spin.

I forget if it was Goering or Himmler who developed the "big lie" theory that if you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes the "truth". So when you have false science unrefuted by real science to legislators with an agenda and then one state can look at another which uses this fallacious argument, and the news media broadcasts it as gospel, and (as you pointed out) CSI and other popular shows continue the myth, people believe it's real and say that of COURSE we should do this... it's just "reasonable gun control"!

It doesn't surprise me. The very notion that guns are the problem is so illogical and stupid that anything they come up with in furtherance of their agenda just couldn't be reasonable. It's all just so much horse pucky.
