Sorry for the late reply, I just joined the forum. I've never even heard of a lifetime CCW permit. Here in Colorado you have to renew after 5 yrs. I had to wait 57 days for mine if that's any help. A lot of people are applying these days and all the info has to come from the FBI. What a crock, and time consuming..

better late than never! thanks for the reply. either last year or the year before indiana introduced the lifetime license to carry, and i would assume other states will be doing the same in the years to come.

Indeed we did, and the thanks for that historic moment, the first lifetime LTC in the country, go to a small group way down in the Evansville, IN area, known as the 2nd Amendment Patriots. Their membership is larger, of course, but about 25 or so people show up to their monthly meetings and carry the lion's share of the work involved, and that group and a friendly state Senator by name of Johnny Nugent introduced, fought for, and got what only makes sense: Why should LEOs waste time, resources, and money checking and re-checking the most law-abiding people in the state every few years when the commission of a crime automatically revokes a permit? (Approximately 1/5 of 1% of 279,281 permits revoked last year, for over 6M citizens.)
And we're not stopping now! The same group and a new organization as well are adding their voices to support new legislation this year to make fewer Victim Disarmament Zones, more recognition of individual rights and the fact that when a land owner allows a vehicle to be parked on his land, he does not have the right to define what is in that other private property, the vehicle. This legislation will not pass itself, though, so call or write your legislators right now! Don't put it off and risk forgetting it! We urge support for SB 29, SB 65, SB 66, SB 158, and HB 1043, as written.
See the IN Forums for more info on the above bills.

My 4 year, in 2006, was about 30 bucks. I got it the week before the lifetime permit was offered because my sheriff's office told me I could "renew" and change to the lifetime whenever I wanted. I'm told that that was written out as a last-minute amendment by the anti- forces in the General Assembly.
As for how you can get a lifetime LTC? You have to live here. They won't issue them to nonresidents anymore. For those that do live here, they cost either $100 or $125, depending on whether or not you have an active LTC at the time you get it.

Are you saying doesn't issue any non-resident permits? That seems odd to me since they recognize every other states permit. I know they used to restrict it to non-residents who worked in Indiana or had a business there. That always seemed odd to me, why not issue non-resident permits on the same basis as for residents and bring in more income to the state.

No, not quite. A law passed in 2007 (I think-too lazy to look it up this moment) that IN will still issue non-res 4 year Licenses To Carry, but no lifetime licenses for non-residents. Sorry for the confusion!
As for the revenue issue you cite, it would not bother me if more people could have an IN LTC. What I'd like is for more states to recognize it, however. I can presently carry lawfully in 24 states with my IN LTC (or without it in AK and VT). TN is similarly restrictive in issue, but they're recognized in 35 states, and 14 of those that don't recognize them don't recognize anyone's but their own, if they even issue them. (WA is the only one that honors some out of state permits but not TN.)
Indiana, by contrast, still is not recognized in the majority of the country, though we're one state away from half and two from the majority. From my reading, the only thing preventing us from being recognized by some is their insistance on a formal reciprocity agreement, (WV, for example) while others are hung up on training requirements and the like.
On the other hand, I can certainly be pleased with what we have while still working to improve our laws-they could be a helluva lot worse.

JB: Not sure what happens. I bet ISP could tell you, though. (317)233-5054
Jayspapa: to my knowledge, yes, to get an IN LTC, you must either be a resident of the state or must have a business here. Forgive if I've not stated this perfectly, I'm in a bit of a hurry this morning.
