    Default Still not cool

I've always been a revolver guy. I was talking to my buddy at work, and told him that I switched from my .38 to a .45 with the cold weather and the bulkier clothes that go with it. My friend understands my love of revolvers enough that he looked at me crosseyed and asked "you're not carrying that blackhawk as a carry gun are you?" I answered, "nope, I've crossed over to the dark side and have started carrying my 1911". My friend, who has always tried to get me to buy a glock just looked at me and said - "Dude, you're carrying a gun that was invented over a hundred years ago, and think that makes you modern? Welcome to the 20th century, 10 years into the 21st"

Geez, and I thought using one of these bottom feeding things would give me some style points and make me younger.

On this note, anyone got a good recommendation for a holster? I'm using a Fobus adjustable paddle and a Galco Matrix and don't really like either. The Fobus seems to stick out and wobble on my hip (I carry at around 3:30 to 4:00) and the Matrix allows the muzzle to dig into my seat cushions as a result of the low profile and open muzzle.

Tuna, I'm not cool either transport my handgun in a fanny pack. I'm told they aren't in fashion.
Remember the 1991 Luby Cafeterria Massacre of the Unarmed (Kileen, Tx before Concealed Carry) Do we need 23 people to die similarly in Illinois before we have effective self defense?

Well Tuna... I like using my Serpa holster from Blackhawk when carrying any of my full size blasters... but for my more compact carry guns, I like the JIT Slide by Don Hume... I have several as they are form fit leather for all the popular handguns... I carry a G39 as my everyday gun.

I carry a Glock 21 in a Fobus paddle holster and am quite comfortable either OC or CC with it.

I just ordered a 3.1 from JMG holsters. It is an IWB with a snap (clips or offset available) and so far it is great. It keeps the gun close to my side, but the sweatshield keeps the hammer from rubbing my love handles raw (so to speak).
It isn't form fit, but was very reasonable for price and seems to be decent quality.

And just to say on topic - I just picked up my "new" shotgun. A Stevens model 520 (old style so circa 1920) that I'm looking for a new barrel to cut down and make into my traveling / HD shotgun.

Tuna, I've used the Comp-Tac (http://www.comp-tac.com/) single piece moulded Kydex paddle holster with my compact 1911 for several years. It is very easy and comfortable, and it goes on and comes off with very little effort. It holds the gun nice and tight against my side. I can recommend it without any reservations.

I know what you mean about your adjustable paddle. I used to have one of those, and it does stick way out there. Not only that, but the Fobus I used for some time actually started putting holes in my shirts from those two little brass brads that hold the two pieces together. I have the Comp-Tac paddle with a forward cant to it. I don't miss the adjustable feature at all.

Tuna - I feel your pain. I qualified for my CHP with an Uberti Cattleman Single Action Army in .45 Colt. I also shot IDPA with this gun, to all kinds of ribbing. Later I came and shot a Smith and Wesson Model 25, and they all welcomed me into the 20th Century, like you. The first time that I showed up to a match with a semi-auto, the range officer actually was worried that I would shoot myself. After I finished, they all stood around with their mouths open, and I informed them that I had used a .38 Super in IPSC competition for years and was well acquainted with the operation of a semi-auto.

As to the 1911, have you tried a Sparks "Summer Special". I believe that several companies make these, and I have heard good things about them.

As to the holster issue, look into some of the open top or thumbbreak leather OWB holsters. I carry a 1911 as well and I like my holsters high and tight. Below is one of the holsters that I use with my Commander. It my not be your particular cup of sunshine, but I'm just throwing it out there for your consideration.

I'm not sure why anyone would consider a 1911 a poor choice, companies have been trying to copy John Browning's design ever since it came out. I carry a full size 1911 concealed easily in shorts and a T-shirt. I'm using a Blackhawk Inside the Pants Concealment (leather) holster that keeps it very tight to my side. I do have to make some minor adjustments if I'm sitting in a car for a while but I consider it comfortable enough.

I have wet-sanded some of the rough points on the gun that do make contact with my skin so over time it has become very comfortable for concealed carry. It is stainless so I don't mind sweating all over it in the summer heat of South Carolina.

I do have a Blackhawk Serpa holster for the colder months but we only have about two of those here.

Ask your pal if he knows when the automobile was invented, and why he isn't floating around on his Jetson's rocket car? 1911's are still around because they work so well.

Is your Fobus a belt holster, or paddle? I find that the paddles do move around a bit, but with either type I like them. Perhaps a thicker belt may help. I like my holsters to be movable, while I'm standing or walking I keep them at 3:00 and when sitting in my car, I slide them forward a bit to keep the metal out of the fabric of the seats, which has the added benefit of making the pistol more accessible with seat belt in place.

That's what works for me, but your mileage may vary.
